Who Can Apply?
You may qualify for naturalisation if you have held one of the following statuses for at least 12 months before applying:
- Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR)
- Settled Status (under the EU Settlement Scheme)
- Indefinite Leave to Enter
👉 If you are married to a British citizen, the 12-month waiting rule does not apply.
General Eligibility Requirements
To apply for British citizenship through naturalisation, you must also:
- Be 18 years of age or older
- Have been physically present in the UK exactly five years before your application is received
- Demonstrate English language proficiency (or Welsh / Scottish Gaelic)
- Pass the Life in the UK Test
- Show that you intend to make the UK your permanent home
- Meet the good character requirement
UK Residence Requirements
You must also satisfy the Home Office residence rules:
- Have lived in the UK for at least 5 years
- Have spent no more than 450 days outside the UK during those five years
- Have been outside the UK no more than 90 days in the final 12 months
- Have no existing immigration restrictions at the time of application
